One thing I feel like I have struggled with for most of my life is the want for material things. "If I could only have this, life would be better."
You hear it all the time: You have a spot in your heart that only God can fill and you will never truly be content until you fill that spot with him and only him.
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard that said yet I still want the things of this world. The things that have no eternal purpose and cannot take me anywhere beyond this life.
This week during my quiet time I've been reading through Ecclesiastes, written by the King of Israel, Solomon. Solomon had it all. He had money, fame and pretty much anything else you could ask for. Throughout Ecclesiastes Solomon discusses how all he sees when he looks around is people trying to pursue happiness (man how things haven't changed.) However, Solomon was a man that had everything in the world and reading Ecclesiastes like me, you might ask yourself--why is he not happy? However Solomon, often referred to as one of the wisest men, concludes with this "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is man's all"(Ecclesiastes 12.13) "Life's not about being happy, it's about God. Focusing on God brings meaning to our lives." This is a guy that had it all, yet knew he had nothing without Christ.
Solomon's story brought me to Job. Job lost everything, yet he still knew no matter what he lost; his family, house, land, health, he still had God and he knew that he would "NEVER leave him nor forsake him. (Hebrews 13.5). Am I like Job? If I lost everything, would I still find joy in the fact that I have all I need, a Savior that loves me?
